Office of the CTO

Incremental optimization will not cut it for some of the most complex problems. Those warrant a fresh techno-business worldview—often external and non-partisan—combined with clear discretion on economics and ROI.

Problem classes

Where this office engages

Four classes of hard problem. Same posture: worldview first, then numbers, then the cut.

  1. Complex Migrations

Zero-downtime, active-active database and application migrations—when the blast radius makes big-bang optimism dishonest.

  2. Performance Engineering

Tail optimization for parallel-distributed and concurrent user-facing systems—p99 and critical path, not average-case folklore.

  3. Cost Rationalization

First-principles spend optimization and fin-ops across cloud, on-prem, and PaaS—architecture-shaped economics, not TCO theater.

  4. Purpose-built Systems

Distributed systems in data, AI, and infrastructure—built for the problem when the catalog cannot give you the edge.

How we work

When incremental will not cut it

Some problems do not yield to another tuning pass or another vendor bake-off. They need a fresh techno-business worldview—often an external, non-partisan one—and that worldview has to be combined with discretion on economics and ROI. Architecture without the numbers is theater; numbers without a worldview are a spreadsheet.

We help tackle that class of problem. Engagements are usually led by MVPs from our A team. The POV is opinionated but vendor-neutral. The work is rooted in numbers—latency, correctness, cost, and the cutover risk you can actually underwrite.

Bring the hard problem

Share the blast radius, the constraint, and what success is worth. We will say whether an Office of the CTO engagement is the right shape.
